The Japan Consortium for Area Studies (JCAS) has been striving to establish area studies information bases, as a means of cultivating new potential in the field through effective and efficient joint use by member researchers. The effort refers to the integration of information resources derived from diverse sources, and the refinement of the same by incorporating information studies centered around Geographic Information Systems and multilingual information processing technologies. The former study groups: Area Studies Information and Information Resources Sharing Study Groups, previously leading this activity, have now been merged as the "Information Resources Section" in 2010.
